The church at Corinth had been swayed by false teachers to discredit Paul and his ministry. The slanderous attackers claimed he was fickle, proud, unimpressive in appearance and speech, dishonest, and unqualified as an apostle of Christ. Throughout this letter the apostle is placed in the awkward position of defending himself against these accusations while also giving timeless instruction and encouragement to the faithful believers.
Christians are not called to be bland, neutral, and boring. Instead we are called to bring the fragrance of life or the smell of death wherever we go.
