A Study of 2 Corinthians

The church at Corinth had been swayed by false teachers to discredit Paul and his ministry. The slanderous attackers claimed he was fickle, proud, unimpressive in appearance and speech, dishonest, and unqualified as an apostle of Christ. Throughout this letter the apostle is placed in the awkward position of defending himself against these accusations while also giving timeless instruction and encouragement to the faithful believers.

    Grace Giving

    Pastor Joe
    October 12, 2008

The Macedonian churches provides a beautiful picture of selfless giving and a generous heart. The giving and responsible handling of our financial resources is just as important today as it was in the 1st century church.

    Message Notes

    2 Corinthians 8
    1.    Grace Leads To Generous Giving
    2.    Grace Giving Is Voluntary
    3.    Grace Givers First and Foremost Give Themselves to The Lord
    Pastor Warren Weirsbe says this,

“I teach a Sunday School class, so I don’t have to give!” is not an explanation—it’s an excuse. The Christian who remembers that his gifts are gifts will be motivated to give to others and not “hide” behind his ministry for the Lord. I have met pastors and missionaries who have argued that, since they devote their whole time in serving the Lord, they are not obligated to give. Paul argued just the opposite: since you are wonderfully gifted from God, you ought to want to give even more!

    4.    Churches, Missionaries And Ministries Must Administer Contributions Above Reproach

    APPLICATION
    1.    Be a grace receiver before you try to become a grace giver.
    2.    Questions to ask yourself:
    -    Do you give eagerly and joyfully to the Lord’s work?
    -    What ways can you curb your lifestyle in order to give generously?
    -    Does the current economic crisis change the way you look at giving, if so why?
    -    What are the ways you can begin to engender a giving, generous heart in your children?
