Rediscovering the Holy Spirit

When it comes to the Trinity, the least known member is the Holy Spirit.  We have allowed his person to remain a mystery, we have sought to minister apart from his power, and we have a serious lack of joy in life because of this neglect.  Passionate followers of Christ know it takes much more than trying harder, being more disciplined, or filling our lives with more activity.  What we need is a fresh and consistent relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit Immersion and Filling

Phil Tanaka
July 18, 2010

What does it mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit?  What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?  These are biblical terms but what does it mean and how does this happen?

Message Notes

Holy Spirit Immersion and Filling means:
Knowing Him with Intimacy and being filled with His love and power.

Experience
Don’t be afraid to enter into a relationship with Him.  Another word for “immersion” is baptism; it's like taking a piece of cloth and dipping it into a dye to color it.   Acts 1:4

Intimacy
Knowing the Holy Spirit is about knowing how much God dearly loves us.
Romans 5:5

Interaction
If we have ignored the Holy Spirit, it is not God who is failing to interact with us; it is we who are failing to interact with Him.  When Jesus left, He said the Father would send the Holy Spirit to be our Comforter, our Counselor and our Friend.  John 14:26

A Big Hug
Imagine God were to give you a great big hug so hard He came right inside you.  The Holy Spirit is God who lives inside us.  He is super glued to you.
1 Corinthians 3:16
Romans 8:11
2 Timothy 1:14

Better to Meet the Holy Spirit Now
We are all going to meet the Holy Spirit in heaven; He’s part of the Trinity.  Wouldn’t it be better to meet Him now while He’s sent to be our Helper here on Earth?

How do we do this?  Ask Him.
Also, Three Suggestions:
1.  Read the Bible -- Look up all the verses that talk about Him.  Write them down and say them aloud like a confession.

2.  Talk with Him.  Like any relationship, begin by talking.  Think back to your childhood, to your very best friend that you ever had.  The Holy Spirit is meant by Jesus to be an even better friend than that.  That’s why Jesus said it was better for us if He leaves, so the Father will send the Holy Spirit to us.

3.  Surrender.  We can’t be filled by Him if we are already filled with something else.  He fills whatever we surrender.  If you surrender to Him now, He will fill you.
