Cambodia 2006: Partners in Prayer

Oct 14 - Oct 28
Hello! We would like to tell you how encouraged we are that you have decided to join our team in this endeavor to pursue God and His heart! We hope that you, too, will draw close to God and know His heart all the more as we walk together to touch the nations!

We need God. We need Him to move. We need Him to work. We need His love and grace and mercy to shine forth. We need to know Him. This is the heart with which we pray as we move into this trip. We don't know what will happen on this trip: the troubles we will face, the blessings and triumphs we will be witness to.  Yet, regardless of what happens, we want to grow in our hearts to the place where we can praise God in all circumstances.

Through being a PARTNER IN PRAYER, you can walk beside the team to bless God and lift us up as we come face to face with people who need compassion and care.  The following is just a guide-- some requests, as you will ascertain, are for a specific day only. Some are for the whole trip through. Some extend beyond the trip. When you pray, would you please pray accordingly-- as you feel God leading? As an example, "safe travel" may only show up on a few days of the prayer calendar (where "travel" is a "bigger" priority for that day), but we will still be traveling a lot each day (via bus, buggy, boat, etc)-- hence, when "safe travel" shows up on the calendar for a certain day, would you please pray that God would continue to watch over our travel for the whole trip, but especially for that particular day?

Please remember that Cambodia is 14 hours ahead of Seattle (e.g. Monday evening at 5:00 pm in Seattle is Tuesday morning at 7:00 am for us in Cambodia). In general our days will start about 6:00am and end around 11:00 pm (4pm to 9 am, Seattle time).

We want you to know that you play a crucial role in the success of this trip. We humbly implore you to pray hard-- keep up with postings on the website so, as things unfold, you can pray as you feel led.

We are all in this together, and we are so glad to have you along!

Daily Prayer Guide

  2. Please pray for all of the final preparations.
  3. Please pray for protection of the team, their families and supporters.
  4. Please pray that each person going, & each family sending, would come to know God in deeper ways. Pray that our church family would grow closer to God & each other thru this endeavor.
  5. Please pray for effective translators, especially for the pastoral training.
Scripture to Pray: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." I Peter 5:6-7

"So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10
Day 1 - Oct 14, Saturday: God's mission team from Cornerstone leaves for Cambodia at 2 am and arrives at 10 pm Seattle time.

Please pray:
  1. That each of us, along with our Cambodian and Vietnamese brothers and sisters, would grow closer to God and experience Him and His goodness in new and incredible ways-pray that our hearts would be open to what God is wanting to teach us and grow in us.
  2. That God would move in mighty ways through our team and our Cambodian brothers and sisters to help Him and His love to be known by all of the people we meet--that people would accept Him.
  3. For safe passage, good rest, health, & unity of heart--so that we may love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.
  4. That we catch our connecting flight in Taipei. Pray especially that all of our equipment, medicine & eyeglasses arrive safely and get thru customs/authorities without any difficulty.
Scripture to Pray: "Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield." Psalm 5:11-12
Day 2 - Oct 15, Sunday: God's team from Cornerstone arrives in Phnom Penh around noon (10pm, Sat 10/14, Seattle time). They will spend the day preparing for the training, clinics and evangelism opportunities. They will also prayerwalk around Phnom Penh. Joe will depart from a family trip in China to meet us in Phnom Penh around midnight (10 am, Sunday 10/15 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. For safe passage for Pastor Joe.
  2. For pastor Joe and Wayne as they meet our Cambodian contacts--pray for good rapport and understanding between all three--that their hearts would be joined together and unified. Pray that God would prepare their hearts, minds, and mouths for His service in Cambodia.
  3. Pray that we would all have teachable spirits, and live out His generosity, grace, and mercy.
  4. That we would bond with our fellow brothers and sisters and be able to walk alongside them, carry their burdens with them, and encourage them; that we would adjust to the new environment quickly; that God would open our eyes and hearts to the reality of the spiritual situation in Cambodia, and that we would be able to pray with more love, wisdom, and fervor for the people of Cambodia and God's work in their lives.
  5. For spiritual discernment and protection as we prayerwalk. That God would break down strongholds, that His Kingdom would advance in Cambodia. Pray that the enemy would have no power, no authority, no influence in the hearts and lives of the Cambodian people.
Scripture to Pray: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven." Matt. 5:14-16

"Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full." John 16:24b
Day 3 - Oct 16, Monday: Travel to Sihanoukville on the coast (approx 3-4 hrs) for the pastoral training and other ministries about 7am (5pm, Sun 10/15 Seattle time). Joe and Wayne will meet their translators and the pastors, wives and church leaders for the weeklong training session. The team will be quieting their hearts and prayerwalking around Sihanoukville. After the training session the team will set up a medical clinic to care for the pastors, wives and church leaders in attendance. Our day will end around 11:00pm (9am, Monday 10/16 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. For pastor Joe and Wayne as they prepare to help the local pastors and leaders grow closer to God, and to help the pastors grow in their ability to help their congregations (and the community around them) to know God. (Among other things, please pray that everyone will grow in their hearts, skills, organization, planning, and talents) . Pray that Joe, Wayne and the translator would connect with the pastors, discern the needs of each, and powerfully minister to them. Pray especially for the safety of the pastors, that the enemy would be blind to these gatherings.
  2. That the effects of jet lag on the team would be minimal. That the team would be healthy and able to effectively minister to each person they meet not only for physical needs, but also that each person would know how much God loves them.
  3. That the prayer team would be intimate with God and have hearts that are sensitive to His leading and to each person they meet.
  4. For unity of our team and humility of hearts as we join with our brothers and sisters in Cambodia. That the language/culture barrier would not be a factor and that we would be able to serve effectively with one voice and one spirit for His glory.
Scripture to Pray: May the God who give endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6
Day 4 - Oct 17, Tuesday: 1st day of ministry (Ken Lo church). 1st full day of teaching for Joe and Wayne. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Monday Oct 16 to 9 am, Tuesday Oct 17 Seattle time).

Please pray:

Pray that the pastors would connect with and understand in their hearts how much He loves them. Pray for right hearts and teachable minds and hearts. Pray for humility for Joe, Wayne and all the pastors, wives and church leaders before God for the whole week (& beyond). Pray for good communication and understanding. Pray that all would see God as they grow together. Also pray for safe travels for the rest of the team, as they will be traveling to their first ministry site. That the Cornerstone health team would be able to serve with mercy and compassion--that the patients would not see us as "good people helping them," but that they would see that "God is helping them through these imperfect people." That the Kid’s ministry team would be empowered and inspired by the love of God as they minister to the children.
  2. Pray that the people hear of how much God loves them. That they would accept Him into their hearts.
  3. That the prayer team would be growing in their awareness of the spiritual battle going on and be able to intercede appropriately as they join the battle God is waging. Protection for the prayer team.
  4. Pray that if we make a mistake or are insensitive, that God would make things right--that we wouldn't offend or cause anyone to stumble in our efforts to help Him be known.
Scripture to Pray: "Be joyful always; pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." I Thess. 5:16-18

"But the Helper will teach you everything and will cause you to remember all that I told you...I leave you peace; my peace I give you. I do not give it to you as the world does. So don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid." John 14: 26-27
Day 5 - Oct 18, Wednesday: 2nd day of ministry clinic (Prai-nop) church. 2nd full day of teaching for Joe and Wayne. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Tuesday Oct 17 to 9 am, Wednesday Oct 18 Seattle time).
Would you consider fasting today?

Please pray:
  1. That God would be seen in powerful, undeniable ways. That His holiness and mercy would be manifest to all--and that many would come to praise Him.
  2. That all of our hearts would be humble in the presence of our God. Pray against pride.
  3. That there would be such an outpouring of love between JOE, WAYNE, the translator, and the pastors--that their hearts would be joined in praising God and His goodness as they share and learn and teach. Pray for growing opportunities for the health team to share our faith, to engage the enemy for the lives we come in contact with--pray that God would shut the enemy down, and open the doors for us to plant and water and harvest.
Scripture to Pray: go through Ephesians 6:10-16, praying the armor of God on each team member.
Day 6 - Oct 19, Thursday: 3rd day of ministry, serving at Damnat Saday village doing a medical clinic and an informal kids ministry--this is a new location and there are no Christians yet. Last full day of teaching for Joe and Wayne. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Wednesday Oct 18 to 9 am, Thursday Oct 19 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That our Cambodian brothers and sisters would be growing in their faith, in their hope, in their belief that God is good and loves them--that we would minister in such a way that their hearts would be encouraged in their relationships with God. That they would grow in knowing how much God loves them by all that is happening.
  2. That we would bring God joy in our love for Him, each other, and the people of Sihanoukville. That all of heaven would rejoice as people accept Christ into their heart.
  3. That the Spirit would work through JOE, WAYNE and would be felt by all in such a way that people are inspired, that chains are broken, that they are unified with one spirit... that all would understand in their hearts the depth of forgiveness and grace and mercy that God has given--and that this would empower them in such a way that the lives of their congregations and communities are transformed as they minister His love in powerful ways.
  4. For all of the loved ones who are at home. That God would be watching over each of you. Please lift up Rita Yoshihara, Denise Freund and Tina Ogimachi who are parenting while their husbands are in Cambodia.
Scripture to Pray: "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity. It is like precious oil poured on the head." Ps. 133:1-2

"Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." Heb. 13:15
Day 7 - Oct 20, Friday: 4th day of ministry, serving at a Vietnamese fishing village and red light district--we are not able to do clinic or a formal kids ministry, but we will be actively evangeling and praying for the area. Last day (1/2 day) of teaching for Joe and Wayne. Travel back to Phnom Penh after lunch. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Thursday Oct 19 to 9 am, Friday Oct 20 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. For the local pastors in Cambodia. There has been much oppression and suffering and sacrifice by our brothers and sisters there. Pray that even during this past week, that they will have grown closer to God, and to each other, knowing how much He loves them and sees them and takes delight in them. Pray that they will continue to grow in helping their flocks understand the depth of the love that God has for them. That they would be growing in their ability to speak His words, love with His heart and minister with His power. Pray that God would continue to watch over them, and that they would be united in Spirit.
  2. For the team in Sihanoukville--that the people we see, the government officials that we interact with, would have their eyes opened to who God is; and that they would want to be in relationship with Him.
  3. Good time of fellowship and encouragement as our whole team will join together with our Cambodian brothers and sisters for lunch. Also pray that the enemy would be blinded to this time.
  4. Safe passage and rest as the team travels back to Phnom Penh by bus.
  5. Safe travel for Janis as she leaves for Cambodia.
Scripture to Pray: "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive...as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom" Col. 3:12-16
Day 8 - Oct 21, Saturday: Children’s Leader Training and medical clinic (Tukok Church). Janis arrives in Phnom Penh around noon (10 pm Seattle time). Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Friday Oct 20 to 9 am, Saturday Oct 21 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That God would give us an extra measure of strength and patience as we continue to serve.
  2. That God would grant wisdom and discernment to Kathy and Kellie as they teach 20 local children’s ministry leaders techniques to reach the next generations for Christ. Pray for clear lines of communication. That Kathy and Kellie would be empowered with God's words and love to help each minister to grow--not just in their skills and abilities to help the kids to connect with God and know Him, but also that they themselves would experience God and know even more in their heart how much God cares for them... that each minister would be inspired and that their relationship with God would grow more vibrant
  3. That as we serve, as we bump up against our own fears, our own limits, our own selfishness and brokenness, that God would meet us there--to help refine and grow us. That we would not run from this refinement, but that we would be yielded to Him and His work so that all the days of our lives, we would cling to Him and draw near to Him.
  4. That our hearts would be experiencing God in such amazing ways that our mouths would be filled with heartfelt praise for the one who loves us so and would draw the people we minister to a place where they give their hears to God.
Scripture to Pray: "Let the peace of Christ dwell in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." Col. 3:15
Day 9 - Oct 22, Sunday: 7th day, day of rest for the teams. A day of fellowship with the locals. Tour the killing fields and S21 war museum. Our day will start at 7 am to 11 pm (5 pm, Saturday Oct 21 to 9 am, Sunday Oct 22 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That we would all join hearts to gratefully worship our God together.
  2. That we would be in good health (esp. our stomachs!), well rested, and that God would continue to knit our hearts together as His sons and daughters.
  3. Continue to pray for the prayer warriors on our team as they are on the front lines of the spiritual battle throughout the trip. That they would be protected from the enemy’s attacks and filled even more with the Spirit. That as they battle, that they will grow in seeing Him as Jehovah Jirah (the Lord will provide), Jehovah Nissi (the Lord is my banner) and Jehovah Tsebaoth (the Lord of hosts).
  4. For God’s healing for the country as He seeks to redeem Cambodia from the horrific aftermath of man’s sin.
Scripture to Pray: "For the kingdom of God is...righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification." Rom. 14:17-19
Day 10 - Oct 23, Monday: 8th day of ministry. Day off Cornerstone team to rest, reflect and unwind. Wayne leave for Seattle around 11 am (9 pm, Sunday Oct 22 Seattle time). Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Sunday Oct 22 to 9 am, Monday Oct 23 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That spiritual strongholds will be breached and overrun. That people will be set free. That people's eyes and hearts will see the goodness of God and accept His incredible gift of salvation.
  2. That as His church, all of us--Cambodian, Japanese, Caucasian, Chinese, Vietnamese--would praise Him with our hands, our feet, our minds, our mouths, every part of us, TOGETHER, as we minister His goodness to the people who come. Pray that our hearts would rejoice with our God.
  3. Refreshment and rest for the team.
  4. Safe passage for Wayne as he returns home. That God would draw him close and grow him as he reflects on the trip and all that God has shown him.
Scripture to Pray: "May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word." II Thess. 2:16-17
Day 11 Oct 24, Tuesday: 9th day of ministry (Anh-Lung-Wet church in an army station with 200 soldiers, some have already accepted Jesus Christ). Medical clinics only. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Monday Oct 23 to 9 am, Tuesday Oct 24 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. For the hearts and minds of the soldiers and the whole government, that they would see how much God loves them, to such a degree, that they would give their hearts to Christ.
  2. That God would continue to work in each of our lives (Cambodian/us) to help us to be all that He wants us to be. Some of us are going through difficult circumstances, some of us are not doing so well, but we ask that God would help us to experience Him in such a real way that we can walk with joy and peace in all circumstances.
  3. That the Cambodian pastors and ministry workers would be able to bond with one another, work together, iron out differences, and grow together. Pray that they would be able to walk with God together and minister with power in helping others to get to know God, and get to know God better. Pray that cooperation would increase, and division decrease so their efforts may have a multiplicative effect in all ways.
  4. Pray that God's church in Cambodia would grow stronger in love, grace, and mercy as each day goes by so that it will be a beacon of light in a dark, oppressed place. Pray that the church body would continue effective follow-up with the people who have been through the clinics and regardless if they see results of their labor or not, that they would continue to plant, water and harvest for God’s kingdom.
  5. That the transition between ministries from 1st week to 2nd would be seamless
Scripture to Pray: "And for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador...that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak." Eph. 6:19-20
Day 12 Oct 25, Wednesday: 10th day of ministry clinic and children’s ministry (Tuakasa church). Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Tuesday Oct 24 to 9 am, Wednesday Oct 25 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That God would watch over each seed that is planted. That each seed would grow into that tall tree that God can use to shelter, nurture, and help others to grow. Pray that there would be watering and harvesting in abundance today.
  2. Pray that the children will be able to experience and remember God’s love for them.
  3. That the people who come to the clinics would see and know that there is a God, and that they would want to know with Him.
  4. Pray for an extra measure of strength and wisdom as the team reaches the end of the trip.
Scripture to Pray: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matt. 11:28-30

"For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day." 2 Tim 1:12
Day 13 Oct 26, Thursday: 11th day of clinic and children’s ministry (Sensok Village) for pupils of Love Class. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Wednesday Oct 25 to 9 am, Thursday Oct 26 Seattle time).

Please pray:
  1. That all that was taught during the children's ministry would take root and help many children in the area to sprout and flower and mature into all that God wants them to be.
  2. That the last day of health clinic would be another day where God's gentleness, generosity, and goodness would be known by many. That many would come to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
  3. Pray that the Lord will raise up more leaders.
Scripture to Pray: "For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sewer and bread to the earth, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth.. It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out with joy, and be led in peace..." Is. 56:10-12
Day 14 Oct 27, Friday: 12th day of clinic (½ day at Saigon Bright Orphanage). Dinner with leader of Evangelical Fellowship of Cambodia. Our day will start at 6 am to 11 pm (4 pm, Thursday Oct 26 to 9 am, Friday Oct 27 Seattle time).

Please pray
  1. For God's continued hand of protection and nurture on all that was done.
  2. Against the efforts of the enemy to snatch away and destroy the work that was done. Good rest, health and fellowship with team members.
  3. That God would, by this time, have left an indelible mark in each of our hearts (Cambodian, Vietnamese and American) of a greater hope, a greater joy, a greater peace, a deeper faith, and a deeper love relationship with the One who loves us so.
Scripture to Pray: "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.¡ I Cor 15:58
Day 15 Oct 28, Saturday: leaving Cambodia, but still in our hearts and prayers. Heading to the airport Saturday morning around 9 am (7pm, Friday Oct 27). Should arrive in Seattle around 1 pm, Saturday.

Please pray:
  1. For safe passage back to Seattle
  2. That the Lord would help us articulate our experiences so that we would have boldness and grace as we share all that we saw--to testify of God and His goodness--that even here, people would come to know God and praise Him for who He is and what He’s doing.
  3. That God would watch over our brothers and sisters in Cambodia--that their faith would not waver but surge--that their love would not grow faint but grow deeper and stronger--and that God would continue to draw them and mature them and to take joy in them--that as one family we can praise God together, love God together, and help the world know God... together.
Scripture to Pray: "Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man’s behalf! Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard; he has preserved our lives, and kept our feet from slipping." Psalm 66:5, 8-9

"Lord you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us." Is. 26:12
Post-trip:
  • PRAY that the seeds planted would take root and continue to work and be protected. That God’s kingdom would grow powerfully in Cambodia so that all will know He is God.
  • PRAY for us as we get back into work and family schedules. That the main things that God has shown us through this experience will not be quickly forgotten, but a stepping stone in our journey with Christ. (The re-entry into America is sometimes the time of greatest spiritual attack. Satan doesn’t want the joy of the mission to last, or for what God has done to get out).
Scripture to Pray: "Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ...that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak." Col. 4:2-4
